Wilma Jane (Hockersmith) Doxon was born August 31, 1925, the sixth child to Chris and Nora (Evans) Hockersmith at her Aunt Goldie McCartee's home near Ransom, Kansas.
Wilma went to elementary school at West Lone Star and graduated eighth grade in 1939. She graduated from Gove Rural High School in 1943. She got a job working with the Office of Price Administration (OPA), the rationing office, in Gove. The office later moved to Quinter, where she continued to issue sugar stamps. This is where she met Henry Doxon. He was a soldier returning home from the South Pacific. They were married on August 10, 1947, at the home of her parents. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage together until Henry's death on October 25, 2002. To their union were born 6 children: Cynthia and husband Robert Young of Geneseo; Patricia and husband Con Williams of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada; Robert and wife Vicki of Ogallah; Delores and husband Michael DeMers of Los Cruces, New Mexico; Phillip and wife Peggy of Grinnell; and John and wife Myra of Gilbert, Arizona. Other survivors include 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; sisters Marie Mendenhall and Wanda Wildeman; brothers Joe, Willis, Charlie, and Harold; 2 great-grandchildren Katrina White and Andrew John White.
On July 4, 1965, Wilma got a job with the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) office, working a total of 25 years before retiring. After retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at the Gove City Library. In her later years, she really enjoyed literature by listening to books on tape. She also served on the board for the Northwest Kansas Library System. Wilma helped with many quilt projects at the Gove Senior Citizens Center until failing vision caused her to quit sewing. She was a former member of the Stich and Chatter Club. She also was proud to have been a member of the Gove Community Bible Church Choir, having sung with them for over 40 years.
The last four years of Wilma's life were spent at the Gove County Medical Center – Long Term Care Center. She died on Saturday evening, March 1, 2014.
