William (Bill) Leon Mattheyer, 87, passed away Monday December 22nd 2014 at WaKeeney, Kansas. He was born on the family homeplace in the same room as his father south of Chandler, Oklahoma on October 10th 1927 to John Robert and Joyce ann (McCullough) Mattheyer. He married Fern Mattheyer on December 26th 1958 in Okema Oklahoma. Bill came to northwest Kansas with Texaco, Incorporated in 1950 working in the oilfield as a roustabout and pumper living a short time in Russell and Hill City then settled in WaKeeney for the last fifty four years. He retired from Texaco after thirty nine years.
Bill was an avid outdoorsman, competitive rifle and shotgun shooter, lifelong motorcycle rider starting with Indian and Harley motorcycles in the 1940's, and an accomplished boat builder and gunsmith.
Many projects from family and friends were built or repaired in his garage. He enjoyed helping with many Boy Scout campouts and ski trips while the kids were in school. Bill was a long time member of the Ogallah Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife of the home, their sons, Michael, Winfield Kansas, Steve, Oswego Kansas, Troy and wife Yvonne, Ellis, Jeff and wife Nicole, WaKeeney, Two brothers, Prentice and J. W. and one sister, Joyce May Seelig, all of Oklahoma. Eight grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Bobba Ann Wilson.
Visitation with the family will be Friday, December 26th at Schmitt Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be Saturday, at 10:00 am at Ogallah Christian Church with burial following at WaKeeney Cemetery.
