Wayne E. Rhoades, age 87, of Wichita (formerly of Quinter), passed away Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Sandpiper Bay Healthcare Center in Wichita. He was born October 24, 1924, the son of Frank J. and Bertha (Porter) Rhoades in Quinter, Kansas. Wayne served our country in the United States Navy.
On November 3, 1942, Wayne married Doris V. Jamison in Gove, Kansas. They enjoyed 46 years of marriage, up until Doris' passing on February 28, 1989. Wayne and Doris had three children together. On October 28, 1989, Wayne was united in marriage to Phyllis Rhoades. Wayne was baptized into the Church of the Brethren in Wichita in 1952. His membership was transferred to the Church of the Brethren of Quinter, where he was a member up until his death. He was also a member of the American Legion and the local division of the Kansas Campers and Hikers Association, known as "The Cedar Bluffers". Wayne held his pilot's license for several years and enjoyed flying the Kansas skies. He also enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and boating. He was very mechanically inclined. If something needed fixed, modified, or improved, he possessed the ability to do it. He farmed and raised cattle in the Quinter area for many years. Wayne had also worked for Humphrey Aluminum Products, having manufactured and distributed Humphrey products for many years. He was known for always being well dressed and always drove a clean, late model vehicle. In his later years, he enjoyed the use of his computer.
Wayne will be dearly missed by many friends and family, including two sons Robert Wayne (Gail) Rhoades of Quinter, Kansas, and Richard Alan Rhoades of Oakley, Kansas; four stepsons Clarence Wesley (Jill) Rymer of Wichita, Kansas, Michael J. (Janell) Hyatt of Wichita, Kansas, Jimmie J (Shelley) Hyatt of Castle Rock, Colorado, and Timmie R. Hyatt of Wichita, Kansas; one step daughter Tammie Sue (Jeff) Rasmussen of Valley Center, Kansas; two nephews Gary and Jim Rhoades and families; 24 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Doris, a daughter Lynette June Rhoades, and a brother Gael Alvin (LaVerne) Rhoades.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Church of the Brethren of Quinter, Kansas with pastor Keith Funk officiating. Burial will be in the Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter.
There will be no visitation.
