William Ormond Breeden, 94, teacher, farmer, gentle soul, passed away peacefully at Hays Good Samaritan Center on May 5, 2013. Ormond was born in Sheridan County KS on November 24, 1918 to Cass Paul and Effie McGuire Breeden.
Ormond attended a one-room country school and graduated from Quinter High School. He attended Ottawa University and received his BS from Kansas State University in Agriculture.
Ormond began his teaching career in southwest Kansas, interrupting it to serve in the Army Air Corp in Burma and India during World War II.
Ormond married Lenora Johnson on January 12, 1946, a week after returning home from military service. They moved to Quinter so that Ormond could teach vocational agriculture at Quinter High School and help his father on the family farm north of Quinter.
Ormond took great pride in his 33 years of teaching young men to become knowledgeable farmers and leaders. He was a long-time sponsor of Future Farmers of America.
Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church was his lifelong church home. He served as Sunday School teacher, deacon and as a leader in many church activities. His faith was strong and enduring.
Ormond was preceded in death by his wife Lenora, his parents, two brothers, one sister and a grandson-in-law. Ormond is survived by his three children Carolyn Darst and husband Ron, David Breeden and wife Debbie and Karen Breeden. He is also survived by grandchildren Mark Breeden (Anne); Sarah Labriel (Carlos); Ryan Darst (Beth) and Jodi Darst. His eight great-grandchildren were among Ormond's greatest joys—Liana, Mattias, Layla, Clark, David, Adam, Sowelu, and Allison. Also surviving are his sister Fern McWilliams and three honorary grandchildren Tyler, Michael, and Cassidy Breeden
Services for Ormond Breeden will be at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, rural Studley, KS at 2:00 pm Thursday May 9th. Visitation at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter, Wednesday May 8, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
