WaKeeney resident, Virginia "Jeannie" Flax, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013 at her home. She was 60 years of age. She was born December 9, 1952 in Ransom, the daughter of Rudolph (Sr.) and Regina (Augustine) Flax. Jeannie was a 1970 graduate of Ransom High School.

Jeannie was especially active in her church community. She was a member of Christ The King Catholic Church and Altar Society of WaKeeney. She was a religious education instructor and lay minister. She often delivered the Holy Eucharist to the sick and elderly. Jeannie received an award for excellence in pastoral ministry. She was also a Certified Nursing Assistant and Emergency Medical Technician, and was proud to have cared for the elderly through Home Health. She was also known for her gifts as a poet and great cook.

Jeannie will be dearly missed by two brothers Adolph and wife Norma of WaKeeney, Robert and wife Janice of Salina; one sister Dorothy and husband Delmas "Jack" Jacobs of Hays; two sisters-in-law Jeanette and Rosalita Flax; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Rudolph, Jr. and Werner; and nephews Steven, Michael, and Jeffery.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Christ The King Catholic Church with Father Charles Steier as celebrant. Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. at St. Aloysius Cemetery in Ransom.

Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a parish vigil service immediately following at Schmitt Funeral Home of WaKeeney.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Sisters of St. Joseph, the St. Aloysius Cemetery Fund, or Christ The King Building Fund and may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th, WaKeeney, KS 67672.
