Obituary

WaKeeney area resident, Virgil J. Pfannenstiel, age 85, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013 at his home in Cedar Bluff Estates, near Cedar Bluff State Park. He was born in Ellis, April 15, 1928, the son of Jacob Matthew and Anna Marie (Dreiling) Pfannenstiel. Virgil served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

On May 10, 1948, Virgil was united in marriage to LuVerna C. Freitag at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hays. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage together until LuVerna's passing on December 29, 2005.

In his younger days, Virgil was a volunteer firefighter and a Boy Scout leader in Ellis. He was a member of Christ The King Catholic Church and St. Mary's Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Cedar Bluff Lake Association and a life member of the VFW. Virgil was a true outdoorsman; fishing, hunting, camping, and traveling were among some of the things he loved to do. If he had it his way, he would be somewhere on Cedar Bluff Reservoir in his boat with a fishing pole in his hand. He was also known for his ability to fix about anything that had an engine. Virgil spent many years employed as a mechanic. Even after his retirement, he enjoyed taking little jobs on the side to keep busy.

Survivors include two sons Dale (Donnell) Pfannenstiel and Rick Pfannenstiel, both of WaKeeney; seven daughters Carol (Lonnie) Rumback of Union, Missouri, Judy (Gerald) Klaus of Munjor, Joyce (Don) Hertel of Hays, Diane (David) Buchholz of Ellsworth, Vera (Ed) Murphy of WaKeeney, Susan Pfannenstiel of Great Bend, and Kathy (David) Meiar of WaKeeney; one brother James of Dadsville, Alabama; two sisters Barbara Dinkel of Littleton, Colorado and Irene Dreiling of Ellis; fourteen grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother Herman; three sisters JoAnn Brown, Georgine Lewis, and Mary Ann Rhine; and an infant grandson James Brewer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Christ the King Catholic Church of WaKeeney with Father Donald F. Pfannenstiel as celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a parish vigil service immediately following, all at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Cedar Bluff Lake Association and may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th, WaKeeney, KS 67672.
