Obituary

Viola Cecil Ziegler was born September 28, 1917, in LeHigh, KS, to Jake and Marie (Schneider) Michel. She passed away on Monday, April 5, 2010, in Westview of Derby at Derby, KS, at the age of 92. Ole was the third of five children born to Jake and Marie.


On September 30, 1939, Ole was united in marriage to Alex (Oogie) Ziegler in Collyer, KS. Together, they farmed south of Collyer where they raised their family of five children. Ole was a devoted wife and mother along with caring for her children, doing family chores and enjoying her garden. She loved doing crossword puzzles, crocheting and embroidering for all her children, grandchildren and friends. She enjoyed playing the piano, card games, cooking and traveling to the Dairy Queen, always a must when the grandchildren were present. Her favorite pastime was playing bridge with the local bridge club. Ole loved to cook for friends and neighbors who would occasionally drop by the farm on any given day, night, or late night to enjoy food and laughter.


Ole was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, the Altar Society of Collyer, the American Legion Auxiliary, Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. and the F.O.E. (Eagles) Auxiliary.


Ole is survived by her daughters, Ramona Griffith, Wichita, Patricia Deatrich, North Platte, NE, Mary Wolfe and husband, Larry, Wichita; son, Rich and wife, Marilyn, Parker, CO; fourteen grandchildren, Mitch Castor, Tom Castor, Bob Castor, Rhonda Griffith, Christy Halcott, Monte Joe Deatrich, Todd Deatrich, Ronnie Patterson, Andrea Wilson, Carla Chenoweth, Tracy Chapman, Shannon Ramer, Brandon Ziegler, Meagon Perius; twenty-four great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Stewart, Derby; sister-in-law, Martina Zimmerman, Park; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Alex; a son, James; a great-grandson, James Deatrich; two sisters, Freda Bender, Vera Albin; and a brother, Albert (Bud) Michel.

Visitation will be 6-7 PM Thursday at Schmitt Funeral Home in WaKeeney, KS with a vigil at 7:00 PM.

Services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, April 9, 2010 in St. Michael Catholic Church at Collyer.
