Victor John Berens, age 91, of Quinter, KS died Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Gove County Medical Center following a short illness. He was born July 28, 1918 to Ulrich and Elizabeth (Von Lintel) Berens in Vincent, KS.
On May 3, 1949, he married Irene Mermis at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Walker, KS. After their marriage, they moved to a farm north of Park. To this union, four children were born: Wayne, Leon, LeAnn and Eileen. Irene preceded him in death on October 2, 2007.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a World War II veteran having served in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. After moving to Quinter from Park, he was an active volunteer at the Long Term Care facility where you could find him calling the numbers for Bingo and playing cards with the residents. For years, he served as the Lector for the Monday morning Masses held at the Long Term Care facility.
Victor enjoyed gardening and often took over the cooking for family dinners. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and a favorite activity was giving them piggy-back rides when they were little. He also enjoyed a good game of checkers, teaching many of them how to play.
Survivors include his sons, Wayne and wife, Gayla, of Quinter, KS and Leon and wife, Debbie, of Topeka, KS; his daughters, LeAnn Keener and husband, Tom, of Rush Center, KS and Eileen Roberts and husband, Erroll, of Hays, KS; grandchildren, Allison (Berens) and husband, Josh Johnson, and Ryan Berens, all of Gardner, KS, Craig Berens of Great Bend, KS, Sarah Berens of Quinter, KS, Chad Berens and wife, Leslie, of Saginaw, TX and Joel Berens, of Ft. Worth, TX, Jacob Keener of Rush Center, KS; Specialist Clinton Roberts and wife, Vivian, of Clarksville, TN, Jessica Roberts of Wichita, KS and Emily Roberts of Hays, KS; great-grandchildren, Micah and Pejah Berens of Saginaw, TX.
Survivors also include two sisters, Thecla Haas of Hays, KS and Irene Dinkel of Victoria, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ulrich and Elizabeth (Von Lintel) Berens; and five brothers, Louis, Otto, Fidelis, Bernard and Elmer.
Services for Victor will be held Tuesday, February 23, 2010 in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Park, KS at 10:30 A.M. with Father James Thomas officiating. Interment is in the church cemetery.
