Obituary

Velma LaVergne Gillespie was born in a two room house on a farm north of Grainfield, KS, to the late George 'Lea' and Lula Belle (Cunningham) Chapman. She passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2011 in the Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care in Quinter at the age of 89.

As a young child, Velma attended Liberty Country School, one semester of high school at Hoxie, graduated from Grainfield Rural High School in 1938, and enrolled in Barnes Business College in Denver, CO the following September. After business college, she worked in the SCS office in Hoxie.

On November 21, 1940, Velma was united in marriage to Jack Gillespie. Together, they farmed in the Gove County area. In 1981, they moved to Grainfield because of Jack's health. Jack passed away December 28, 1984.


Velma was an active member in many organizations, including United Methodist Church in Grainfield, United Methodist Women, 4-H, Do What You Want to Club, EHU, and Eastern Star. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and traveling the states and other countries.


Those celebrating her long life today, are her children, Ron Gillespie and wife, Tondalaya, of Kona, HI, Lisa Steerman and husband, Robert, of Grainfield, Jackie Beesley and husband, Edward, of Gove; four grandchildren, Wendy Budde and husband, Mark, Brendon Beesley and wife Kelsey, Dusty Steerman, Shelby Getz and husband, Logan; seven great-grandchildren, Jantz and Morgen Budde, Lexis, Treven and Lyssa Beesley, Austin Steerman, and Layne Getz; and a sisters-in-law, Geraldine Shaw, Beaulah Gillespie, both of Grainfield, and Mavis Chapman of Hoxie.


Those preceding her in death were husband, Jack; a son, Larry; five brothers, Floyd, Delmar, Clifford, Lawrence, and Lester Chapman; and a sister, Della Stevens.

Services for Velma will be 10:30 AM, Friday, January 21, 2011 in the Grainfield United Methodist Church. Interment in Grainfield Cemetery. No Vistitation is planned.
