Obituary

Orvis Gail Katt, age 81, peacefully departed this world on Friday, May 17, 2024. He was born on May 23, 1942, in Quinter, KS, the son of Otto Gust and Frances Lydia (Grecian) Katt.

A graduate of Grainfield Rural High School in 1960, Orvis embarked on a lifelong journey rooted in the soil of Gove County. For 45 years, he dedicated himself to the art of farming until his retirement in 2005, when he bid farewell to the farm and made his home in Quinter, KS.

Orvis was not only a steward of the land but also a devoted member of Masonic Lodge 348 in Hoxie, KS. His commitment was honored with a 60-year pin shortly before his passing. Beyond his agricultural pursuits and Masonic affiliations, Orvis was renowned for his passion for games, sports, and hunting. A master of cribbage, he welcomed any challenger to the table, relishing in the camaraderie of competition. Orvis also served his county as Gove County Commissioner for 8 years.  His presence was a fixture at Quinter basketball games, where he held court just inside the door, always ready to share a word with friends old and new.

Orvis leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, cherished by his brother-in-law, Everett Ford, and a host of nieces and nephews: Ronda Myers of Vienna, IL; Connie Strasheim of Denver, CO; Joyce Hock of Frostburg, MD; Stirling (Bev) Miller of Craig, CO; Jeff (Holly) Howard of Portland, OR; Brad (Myra) Howard of Grainfield, KS; Tracy (Beverly) Howard of Wamego, KS; and Dan (Candi) Miller of Craig, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Verna Miller, Dorothy Higgs, Bonnie Ford, Joyce Howard, and niece Glenda Miller.
