Merle Arlen Sherfick was born November 10, 1931 in rural Trego County, KS to the late Walter and Neva (Morton) Sherfick. He passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2010, in the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital at WaKeeney at the age of 78.

As a child, he attended rural schools in rural Trego County and graduated from Trego Community High School with the class of 1949.


On February 21, 1957, Merle was united in marriage to Velma Keller in the Lutheran Church at Ellis. Together, they farmed in rural Trego County near Ogallah.


Merle was a member of the Ogallah Christian Church and a life member of the VFW Memorial Post #9139 in Ellis. He also served as Trego county Commissioner for eight years. Merle enjoyed farming, especially working with horses and cattle. In earlier years, Merle and Velma would participate in square dancing and polka dancing activities. In his spare time, Merle restored his pride and joys; a 57 Pontiac, a 49 Chevy truck that his father owned, and a 40 Chevy truck.


Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Velma, of the home; a brother, Morton Sherfick and wife, Cathy, of Ogallah; three sisters, Loretta Tow of Louisburg, KS, Virginia Hafliger of WaKeeney, Jane Norseen and husband, Gary, of Gothenburg, NE; a sister-in-law, Lois Sherfick of Ogallah; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Milton 'Nick' Sherfick and Merle's twin, Marlin Sherfick.

Visitation will be held Thursday, February 25, 2010 from 6-8 PM at Schmitt Funeral Home in WaKeeney.

Services for Merle will be held Friday, February 26, 2010 at 10:30 AM in the Ogallah Christian Church.
