Obituary

Melvin “Mel” Dean Zeman, of Hays, Kansas, was born on December 25, 1944, in Quinter, Kansas, to Harold and Donna (Hickle) Zeman. He passed away on April 2, 2026, at the age of 81, at Via Christi Village in Hays.

Melvin spent his formative years in WaKeeney, Kansas, where he graduated from Trego Community High School. Following graduation, he began his working life as a custodian at Fort Hays State University. He later continued his career in the cleaning industry, retiring as an employee of Clean-Rite LLC of Hays.

Melvin found comfort and companionship with his partner, Linda Groff, with whom he shared 37 years. He dearly loved his grandchildren and took great pride in them, cherishing every moment spent together.

In his free time, he enjoyed the outdoors—especially fishing—and could often be found at Kraus Pond or Roy Jacobs Pond.

He is survived by his son, Brad Zeman of Wichita, Kansas; his grandchildren, Layton and Layla Zeman, Wichita, KS; and his sister, Joquetta Roth of Lakewood, Colorado.

Melvin was preceded in death by his beloved partner, Linda; his parents; and his sister, Marlene LaRue.
