Obituary

Melvin R. Folkers, 84, died Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital. He was born January 19, 1929 at the Schaefer home in Ness County to Karl and Sophie (Schaefer) Folkers.

He married Gloria Stowe in Ransom, Kansas in 1949. They moved to the family farm in Trego County where together they worked the land that has been in the family for generations. Melvin and Gloria were blessed with 64 years of marriage. As a young man, Melvin played baseball and became a licensed pilot. He was happiest when he was outside; raising quarter horses, hunting, fishing and target shooting.


He was a member of the WaKeeney Presbyterian Church (Deacon and Elder), Masonic Lodge (past Master), Order of the Oddfellows (past Noble Grand), Order of the Eastern Star, Saline Valley Buckskinners, and Saddle Club.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria; four daughters, Pamela Davis of Houston, Texas, Karla and husband Jay Currie Topeka, Kansas, Krista and husband Jim Dietz of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kara and husband Sal Canjura of Houston, Texas; honorary son, Jack Wie Sel of Noble, Oklahoma; one sister, Darlene Hille of Ransom, Kansas; seven grandchildren Dedee Novak of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, Marcus Martin of Merriam, Kansas, Clair and Austin Dietz of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kaitlin McMahan, Luciana and Brian Canjura of Houston, Texas; two step grandchildren Megan Davis of Houston, Texas and TJ Davis of Brooklyn, New York and one great granddaughter, Allison Novak of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Ray Folkers; parents, Karl and Sophie Folkers; and brother, Calvin Folkers.

Funeral services will be10:30 a.m., Monday, January 20, 2014, at the Presbyterian Church in WaKeeney. Burial will be in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Masonic rites will follow at 7:00 p.m.
