Obituary

Mary Constance Norton was born September 10, 1911, in Emmerman, KS, located in Ellis County. She was the eighth child and first daughter born to the late John and Mary (Linenberger) Windholz. She passed away Saturday, January 8, 2011, in the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital at WaKeeney at the age of 99.


As a young girl, Mary attended school in Emmerman.


On April 28, 1931, she married William 'Bill' F. Norton. During their marriage of 68 years, they resided in Ellis, WaKeeney, Quinter, and the Hackberry community in Gove County, KS. Mary and Bill loved to travel and visited all fifty U.S. states. They spent many hours playing cards, especially pinochle, which was her favorite, with friends and family. After retirement, they spent ten fun filled years in Tucson, AZ. Bill passed away May 1, 1999.


Mary was initially a homemaker, and later worked as a nurse's aide in Quinter, KS for many years. She was a very active member of the Hackberry Club in Gove County and a devoted member of Christ the King Catholic Church in WaKeeney.


Mary had many friends and was particularly close to her sister-in-law, Rosie Deines. She loved to cook big meals, and her specialty was homemade noodles. Mary was loved by many and upon meeting someone new, would provide them with a big hug.


Those left to mourn her passing are her children, Virgil Norton and wife, Nancy, Santa Cruz, CA, Mary Lou Magee, San Diego, CA, Bill Norton and wife, Kay, Tigard, OR; eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Larry Bowman, Portland, OR.


Those preceding her in death were her husband, Bill; a son Fredrick Norton; a daughter, Dolores Bowman; a son-in-law, Tom Magee; eight brothers; and five sisters.

Visitation is 5:30-7:00 PM Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Schmitt Funeral Home in WaKeeney. Services are 10:30 AM Thursday, January 13, 2011 in Christ the King Catholic Church in WaKeeney with interment in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Park, KS.
