Obituary

Lifelong WaKeeney resident, Marvel L. McGuire, passed away, Sunday, November 24, 2013 at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital, WaKeeney. She was 81 years of age. She was born October 11, 1932, in WaKeeney, the daughter of Joseph Frank and Amalie (Michaelis) Gorsky.

Marvel was a 1950 graduate of Trego Community High School. On June 28, 1953, Marvel married Carl R. McGuire in WaKeeney. They enjoyed 47 years of marriage together until his death on November 4, 2000. She worked as a billing clerk for Western Cooperative Electric until retirement. Marvel greatly valued education and took accounting classes from Colby Community Jr. College while sitting on the USD 208 school board as the first woman President. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church; and within the church Dorcas and the Golden Group. Marvel taught Sunday school to the elementary age for many years. She was a charter member of the ESA Sorority and a lifetime member of the hospital auxiliary. Most importantly, Marvel was a proud mom to her three children. She guided them as a scout leader, cheered them on in their sporting event, and each and every endeavor; she was their #1 fan. A more adoring and adventurous "Grams" was never found. From fishing out of ponds and creeks to learning math facts in a poker game, Grams taught "life's lessons". Granddaughters enjoyed learning how to make German fare with many visits in Gram's kitchen. Marvel's life was her faith in God, family and friends. She was an encourager to all and loved to do something for someone else each and every day. Marvel will be dearly missed by her three children Dana Joan and husband Steve Nelson of Concordia, R. Gary and wife Kim of Mulvane, and Craig and wife Sheila of Hays; five grandchildren Kyle McGuire and wife Bridget of Olathe, Travis McGuire and wife Abby of Dodge City, Corbin McGuire of Manhattan, and Tara and Emily McGuire, both of Hays; two great-grandchildren Gage McGuire of Olathe and Declan McGuire of Dodge City. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers August, Julius, Ed, and Joesph, and three sisters Helen Connor, Ruth Conness, and Greta Dice.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of WaKeeney. Private family burial will be in the WaKeeney city cemetery.
