Obituary

Longtime Quinter resident, Martina Zimmerman, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Gove County Medical Center - Long Term Care. She was 90 years of age. Martina was born February 5, 1923, the daughter of Adam and Mary Ann (Phlieger) Ziegler on the family farm south of Collyer.

Martina was a graduate of Collyer High School. On October 22, 1946, she was united in marriage to Joseph T. Zimmerman. He preceded her in death on September 18, 1962. They were married 16 years. Martina was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society (Treasurer for over two decades) in Park. She served as Sacristan and Eucharistic Minister for many years. Martina was very strong in her faith and was very giving of her time throughout her life. You could find her in attendance at most every mass that was offered at church. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Grainfield. She enjoyed any event that brought family together as she loved to spend time with all of her family. She was also known for her talents in the kitchen. She was an expert noodle maker; it wasn't uncommon to walk into her house and find noodles that she had made on just about every flat surface in the house. Her family always craved her angel food cakes and turkey dressing. Martina was an excellent homemaker. She worked at the Quinter Dairy Queen, the Wagons Ho, and the Q-Inn for many years.

Martina will be missed by many friends and family, including her children Reverend Donald of Manhattan, Darrell wife Barb of Mulvane, William and wife Viv of Hays, Wayne and wife Sheryl of Quinter, Robert and wife Viola of Stafford, Marilyn and husband Glen Gabel of Hays, and Jolene and husband Tim Nejdl of Quinter; twelve grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers Joseph, John J., Antone, Leonard, Henry A., Xavior Francis, Alex Francis, and Adam Jr; sisters Mary, Dorothy, Magdalene (all infants), and Clara Sue Selensky.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Park. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery of Collyer.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday. There will be a 6:30 rosary by the Sacred Heart Altar Society, followed by a 7:00 p.m. Parish Vigil Service, all at Schmitt Funeral Home of Quinter.

Memorial Contributions are suggested to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Hospice Services, Inc. and may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 901 South Main, Quinter, KS 67752.
