Marlene Loyce (Kessler) Coker was born in WaKeeney, KS, on December 9, 1934, to the late Jesse O. and Agnes (Hillman) Kessler. She passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2012, in the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital at WaKeeney, at the age of 77.
As a child, she attended schools in WaKeeney and graduated from Trego Community High School with the class of 1952.
On November 8, 1952, Marlene married Thomas B. Coker in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at WaKeeney. In 1965, they opened Tom's Body Shop and operated it together until retiring in 2000. Tom passed away January 12, 1999.
Marlene was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and was proud to be a part of the choir for thirty-one years. She loved music and dancing. She was also an honored queen of Job's Daughter's. During her spare time, you could often find her driving her yellow dune buggy that Tom built for her. She treasured the times she could entertain her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and spent countless days camping at Cedar Bluff Lake with her family.
Survivors include her three children, Jesse E. Coker, Christi Sumner, both of WaKeeney, Thomas D. Coker and Lavonne of Hays; daughter in-law Louann Weber and husband, Ross, of McPherson; ten grandchildren, Cory Coker and Lisa, of West Pueblo, CO, Luke Coker and wife, Jodi, of Scott City, Micah Coker of Topeka, Mandi Sumner of Denver, CO, Thomas Coker Jr. and Chelsey, of Hays, Tyrel Coker and wife, Amber, of Hoisington, Tanner Coker and Rachel, of Maple Valley, WA, Ashley Conness and husband, Bret, of WaKeeney, Katie Jo Coker of Hays, Troy Havercroft of Kansas City; twelve great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Sharon Gore of Charlotte, NC and Jessie Webb and husband, Charles, of Nampa, ID.
Her husband Thomas; an infant grandson, Elijah Sumner; and two sisters, Kathryn Stradal and Aileen Hake preceded her in death.
Visitation is 5-7 PM Thursday, April 12, 2012 at Schmitt Funeral Home in WaKeeney. Services will be 10:30 AM Firday, April 13, 2012 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church also in WaKeeney with Pastor Randy Gibbs officiating. Interment is in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.
