Obituary

Marian Josephine Schmitt was born May 20, 1923, on the family farm near Quenemo, KS. She was the daughter of Simon J. and Maude M. (Piper) Stadel. Marian passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2009, in the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital at WaKeeney at the age of 86 years, 5 months and 13 days.


As a young child, Marian moved with her parents to Ottawa, KS, where she attended school. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1941.


On April 30, 1942, Marian was united in marriage with Lawrence Earl Schmitt in the Presbyterian Church at Ottawa. They made their home at rural Princeton, KS, where they farmed side by side for over 35 years. In 1973, they retired from farming and moved to Ottawa. A few years later, they moved to Richmond where they lived for five years and in May of 1993, they made their home in WaKeeney. Earl passed away on February 28, 1996.


Marian was a member of the North Baptist Church in Ottawa. She was a member of the Golden Girls and attended the Presbyterian Church in WaKeeney. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and camping. Marian loved playng bingo and cards.


She had a special place in her heart for her family. She especially enjoyed doing special things for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent many hours making homemade noodles and plum jelly for all the family to enjoy. In her later years, she enjoyed embroidering.


Survivors include a son, Jon and wife, Gwen, of WaKeeney; a daughter, Judith Lee of New York City, NY; five grandchildren, Robert Schmitt and wife, Rebecca, of Brighton, CO, Deric Schmitt of Larned, Amber Bourell and husband, Ryan, of Hutchinson, David Lee of New York City, NY, Elizabeth Lee of Stuggart, Germany; and six great-grandchildren, Emily, Shelby, Amiya and Colten Schmitt, Tripp and Maggie Bourell.


She was preceded in death by a son, Patrick; a grandson, Ronald Schmitt; a brother, Ralph Stadel; and a sister, Edna Yockey.


Graveside services for Marian will be held Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. in the WaKeeney City Cemetery with Reverend Harold Demoret officiating.
