Obituary

Marcheta Cartmill, age 92, passed away Monday, May 2, 2016 at Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care, Quinter, KS. She was born May 2, 1924, on the family farm in rural Gove County, to W.O. and Edna (Gregg) Leighton.

Marcheta attended Prairie View District #21 Grade School, Jerome Township, Gove County, KS. After graduating from Quinter High School in 1941, she attended Stricklers Business College in Topeka Kansas. Her career began with M.W. Watson Construction in Topeka. Upon moving to Dighton she worked as a bookkeeper at Durfee Implement, then Church and Kerkoff. When her children were grown she was employed at the Glenn Coberly Feedlot as a bookkeeper.

On January 8, 1949, Marcheta Leighton was united in marriage to Bill L. Cartmill, in Dighton. Bill and Marcheta moved to the family farm in the Missouri Flats community of Gove County. They enjoyed 31 years of marriage together before he passed away on December 18, 1980. Marcheta had resided in the limestone home of her birth for nearly 90 years.

Marcheta was a 4-H Club leader and community volunteer. She enjoyed the companionship of her neighbors in Modern Homemakers Club. She served on the Election Board. Marcheta was a member of the Gove Community Bible Church. Her life revolved around family, farming and faith. She loved farm chores, caring for animals, gardening and planting trees. The joy of her life was her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a servant's heart, always ready to lend a hand.

Survivors include three daughters, Juneal (Brad) Tuttle of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Camille Campbell of Quinter, and Candy (Dean) Getz of Gove; four grandchildren, Michelle (Peter) Swartz of Gilbert, Arizona, Christine (Cameron) Matthie of Ft. Collins, Levi (Kelli) Getz of Quinter, and Logan (Shelby) Getz of Gove; nine great-grandchildren, Camille and Kyle Swartz, Clayton and Conner Matthie, Kayler, Lakin, and Kamry Getz, and Layne and Layton Getz; a brother, Bob Leighton of Quinter; and a sister, Peg Terwilliger of Dighton and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Billie Flora.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 9, 2016 at Gove Community Bible Church, Gove. Burial will be in the Gove Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to service time, Monday, at the church.
