Obituary

Mabel Mildred (James) Fagan was born April 19, 1921, the second child of Morris and Mary (Sherbon) James on the family farm in Central Osborne County, Kansas.   She passed away, Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Logan County Manor in Oakley, Kansas.  She was 92 years of age.

Mabel attended elementary school near Covert.  She attended Osborne High School and graduated from Central Christian Academy in McPherson, Kansas.

Mabel met Leroy Fagan in Osborne at a roller skating rink, which he managed.  They later wed in Concordia, Kansas.  They began their marriage living on a farm 3 ½ miles west of Stockton.  In 1943, they moved to Gove County and lived on a farm ½ mile north of Gove.  To this union 4 children were born:  Ronald Fagan of Florissant, Colorado, Raymond Fagan of Oakley, Kansas, Linda Kaufman of Dodge City, Kansas and Kelly Fagan of Hulbert, Oklahoma.  In the late 1950's, Mabel worked as a part-time postal clerk in Gove.  She was also a clerk at the Dodrill Grocery Store.  She was active in her community, having belonged to Jolly Time, Stitch and Chatter, and Rebekah Lodge.  She loved spending time with her friends at the Senior Center to quilt.  Mabel became Deputy County Treasurer in 1962, and finished out James E. Noel's last term as County Treasurer.  In 1968, she was elected as Clerk of Court and served until she retired in 1998.  She was crowned "Queen" at Gove Old Settlers Day in 2006.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leroy; two brothers, David and Mark James; and a daughter-in-law Cecilia Fagan.  She is survived by her four children; ten grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews.

She will be missed by her family and friends, but we take comfort in knowing that our "Mama" will be spending her 93 rd birthday in heaven this year.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Gove Community Bible Church in Gove.  Burial will be in the Gove Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to service time, Wednesday at the church.
