Lois Thelma Hubalek was born in rural Gove County, KS on March 20, 1919, to the late John and Mary Lee (Crook) Starkey. She passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011, in the Bethany Home at Lindsborg, KS at the age of 92.


She attended schools in Quinter and graduated from Quinter High School with the class of 1937. She graduated from the Venus Academy of Beauty in Wichita in 1940.


On her 29th birthday, March 20, 1948, Lois was united in marriage to Arthur C. Hubalek in the parsonage of the Church of the Brethren in Quinter. They made their home in WaKeeney where they farmed and raised cattle. Lois owned and operated the Venus Beauty Shop in WaKeeney for several years and later was employed as head cook in the Unified School District. Arthur passed away April 7, 1999.


Lois was a member of the First United Methodist Church, UMC Women's Group, Locust Club, Tourist Club, American Legion, VFW Auxiliary, Hospital Auxiliary and the Tops Club, all in WaKeeney. She moved to Lindsborg in 2001 to be closer to family.


Her hobbies included crocheting, flower gardening, crossword puzzles, and Lois was a huge fan of football and basketball.


Those left to mourn her passing are her children, Shirley Hubalek of Catonsville, MD, Verne Hubalek and wife, Linda, of Lindsborg.


Her husband, Art; two brothers, Robert and John, Jr.; and two sisters, Marie and Helen Starkey, preceded her in death.


A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 31, 2011 in the Bethany Home Chapel at Lindsborg, KS.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM on Thursday, September 1, 2011, in Schmitt Funeral Home at WaKeeney with visitation 12:00 PM until time of service on Thursday.
