Obituary

Lewis Wendell Roberts was born June 10, 1922, on the family farm in rural Gove County, KS, to the late Lewis and Florence (Rogers) Roberts. He passed away Sunday, October 23, 2011, in the Gove County Medical Center at Quinter, KS, at the age of 89.


He attended rural Gove County country schools and later served in the United States Army during World War II.


On October 26, 1946, Wendell was united in marriage to Esther Louise Sprenkel in Quinter. She passed away November 7, 1979. He married Emily V. (Frigon) Shoff on July 22, 1989 in Colby, KS.

He was a member of Church of the Brethren, American Legion Post #164, and a past member of Lions Club.

Farming was a passion rather than a job for Wendell. He also loved fossil hunting with his grandchildren. Some of the fossils found on his land are now displayed in the Sternberg Museum in Hays, KS. He also enjoyed traveling to visit his family.


Survivors include his wife, Emily; a son, Wayne Roberts and wife, Barbara, of Hays; two daughters, Anita Kules of Cleveland, OH, and Genell Arnold and husband, Dennis, of LaCygne, KS; step-sons, James Shoff of Topeka, Dennis Shoff and wife, Sherida, of Goodland, Steve Shoff of Quinter; step-daughters, Chris Shoff of St. Louis, MO, Debbie Moore and husband, Ken, of Austin, TX, Diana Euhus and husband, Kent, of Oberlin, Jackie Arnitz and husband, Steve, of St. Louis, MO; six grandchildren, Anastasia Kules, Haley DaVee and husband, Jason, Eriq Roberts, Haley Roberts, Jessica Heidrick, Rebecca Arnold; thirteen step-grandchildren, Lori Harwood, Kelly Shoff, Leslie Shoff, Michelle Douglas, Sherri Kniting, Kristi Franz, Berne Devlin, Darcie Ashcroft, Lindsey Euhus, Brock Euhus, Derek Arnitz, Melissa Arnitz, Kody Shoff; seventeen great-grandchildren; and a sister Wilma Gillespie of Quinter.

Those preceding Wendell in death were his first wife, Esther; and thirteen brothers and sisters.

Visitation 5:30-7:30 PM Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Schmitt Funeral Home in Quinter, KS. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Thursday, October 27, 2011 in Church of the Brethren at Quinter, KS with Pastor Keith Funk officiating. Interment is in Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter.
