Obituary

Lawrence Martin Holzmeister was born June 26, 1922, in Loretta, KS, to the late John and Susanna (Herman) Holzmeister. He passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, in the Gove County Medical Center at Quinter at the age of 89.

As a child, he attended grade school in Otis, KS and graduated from Otis High School with the class of 1942. He was always so proud to be an Army Veteran of WWII. He entered the service October 27, 1942 and was honorably discharged October 26, 1945.

On April 21, 1947, Lawrence was united in marriage to Frances Bollig in St. Anthony Catholic Church at St. Peter. KS. Together they farmed in the Gove County area until moving to Quinter in 2005. Lawrence was truly a steward of the earth as he thoroughly enjoyed farming his crops and tending his cattle. Frances passed away July 31, 2006.

As an active member of the community, he belonged to the Wheatland VFW Post #2864 in Grinnell, the American Legion George M. Scott Post #301 in Grainfield, the Angelus Knights of Columbus in Angelus, and the 40 & 8 Boxcar Club in Hays. He also served on numerous school boards and was a past Sheridan County Commissioner.

During his spare time, Lawrence loved playing pitch, and talking about old times. He treasured times spent with his grandchildren and was always loving and supportive.

Those left to mourn his passing are his children, Kathleen Bieker and husband, Lavern, of McCook, NE, Mary Lou Zerr and husband, Alfred, of Flint, TX, John Holzmeister and wife, Joyce, Raymond Holzmeister and wife, Angela, all of Oakley; thirteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Hubert and wife, Eleanor, of Quinter, Edwin and wife, Darlene, of Hays, Abraham and wife, Pauline, of Salina; and a sister, Josephine Kuntz of Quinter.
