Obituary

Laverna Moore was born on October 11, 1934, to Frank and Katherine (Engel) Selenke in Grainfield, KS. She passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2009, in the Gove County Medical Center, Quinter, KS at the age of 75.


She was united in marriage to Merle Moore at the St Agnes Church in Grainfield, KS on January 18, 1954. Merle preceded her in death on April 26, 1998. She was a life time resident of Grainfield. Laverna worked as a bookkeeper for thirty nine years before retiring, then she served as the Secretary for the St Agnes Parish for twelve years. She was member of the St. Agnes Church, St. Agnes Ladies Organization and Eucharistic Minister at St. Agnes Church. She was also a member Reach for Recovery, American Cancer Board, and Gove County Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary.


Laverna's immediate and extended family was the greatest joy of her life. The Moore home was always open to family and friends, and a few acquaintances that needed shelter. Laverna loved all the holidays. Only a few weeks would pass before decorations were changed out for a different season or an upcoming holiday. Christmas was celebrated more fully with decorations, extra personal gifts, homemade cookies, and treats. She and Merle both had great pride and interest in their children and grandchildren. They encouraged their self-reliance and the exploration of life's possibilities to be accomplished with hard work and continuing education.


She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Merle, her parents Frank and Katherine Selenke, brothers Bob, Brother Jerry and Pius Selenke.


Survivors are daughter Brenda and husband Ross Ikenberry of Wichita, KS, sons Roger and wife Holly of Berryton, KS, and Mark of Phoenix, AZ - Grandchildren Jennifer and Brandon Ikenberry and Jordan Moore - sisters Lavina Logan of Roanoke, TX, Marlene Kaiser of Morrison, CO, Janet Downey Cheyenne, WY, Shirley Kaiser of Cheyenne, WY – sister-in-law Elaine Selenke of Goddard, KS - many nieces and nephews.

Services for Laverna will be Friday, November 27, 2009 at 2:00 PM at St. Agnes Catholic Church at Grainfield, KS. Visitation will be 10:00 – 11:00 AM with vigil service at 11:00 at the church.


Memorials are suggested to the Grainfield Opera House or the Merle & Laverna Moore Scholarship Fund at Wheatland HS or the Gove County Medical Center and can be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 901 S Main, Quinter, KS 67752.
