Keith E. Hockman, age 93, of Hill City, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2013 at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital, WaKeeney. He was born June 7, 1920 in rural Trego County, the son of Carmen Lee and Ethel Bell (Cloud) Hockman.
Keith graduated high school in WaKeeney and went on to serve our country in the United States Army during World War II. He was proud to be a veteran, having served at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. On August 3, 1941, Keith married Hulda Mai. They later divorced. On November 9, 1969, Keith married Viola (Schmidt) Clemons. She preceded him in death on March 16, 2002. Keith was a past member of the Federal Land Bank and the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. He was known for being a very hard worker throughout his life; he did not officially retire until he was 86 years of age. He was a dairyman for many years. He also worked as Chief of Police in WaKeeney, then Hill City. Keith was a security guard at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, and spent many years as shop foreman at Poe Servicing in Hill City.
Suvivors include two sons Kenneth L. and wife Lillian of Sacramento, California and Rick and wife Cleo of Hill City; two daughters Diane Cooper of Hays and LaDonna and husband Edward Mattke of Ogallah; three step-daughters Darcy and husband Joe Pembleton of Salina, Karla and husband Jeff Harding of Benson, Arizona, and Tina and husband Mike Doerfler of Hays; a sister Katherine Kroeger of El Paso, Texas; eleven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Viola; his son Keith, Jr.; brother Wilbur; sisters Dorothy McGowan, Marjorie Richards, and infant sister Esther Marie.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Schmitt Funeral Home of WaKeeney. Burial will be in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.
Visitation and viewing will be Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
