John H. Sandelin was born January 10, 1924 in Garfield, KS, to the late John Anshelm and Alma Agnetta (Nelson) Sandelin. He passed away Thursday, July 8, 2010 in Omaha, NE at the age of 86.
He graduated from Garfield High School and later attended Wichita State and Fort Hays State Universities. He entered into the US Army on April 3, 1945 and served with the 44th Tank Battalion in Japan. He was honorably discharged November 28, 1946.
On November 9, 1948, John was united in marriage to Marguerite Jean LaRue in the Hays Presbyterian Church. Together they farmed and raised cattle in rural Trego County.
John was an active and faithful member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and the American Legion Moore Post #197, which he also served as Chaplain. He participated on the Trego Lemke Advisory Board and held two terms on the FFA Advisory Board, all in WaKeeney, KS, and was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Omaha, NE.
In his spare time, John enjoyed working with horses and leatherwork. His legacy is that of a man who loved his family and taught them priceless lessons, a friend of many, and most of all, a strong man of faith.
Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Marguerite, of Omaha, NE; three children, Peg Bartelt and husband, Stephen, of Omaha, NE, Phil Sandelin and wife, Patti, of Memphis, TX, Ellen Odom, and husband, Rodney, of Lenexa, KS; seven grandchildren, Rebecca Bartelt of San Antonio, TX, Sarah Lindau and husband, Robert, of Omaha, NE, Broc Sandelin and wife, Lerae, of Pomona, CA, Sage Reynolds, and husband, JR, of Hays, KS, Casey Menconi and husband, Chad, of Martinez, CA, Rusty Long and wife, Marlene, of WaKeeney, KS, Jennifer Odom of Lenexa, KS; and ten great-grandchildren, Bobby and Emily Lindau, of Omaha, NE, Kyla, Eric, and Jillian Menconi, of Martinez, CA, Kamdyn Reynolds of Hays, KS, Tabitha and Joe Wolf, Karlie and Grady Long all of WaKeeney, KS.
Funeral Services for John will be Monday, July 12, 2010 at 10:00 AM in the Zion Lutheran Church, 14205, Omaha, NE. Visitation will be 4-6 PM Sunday at the Church.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at 10:00 AM in the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at WaKeeney with Ft. Riley Military Honors.
