Obituary

John Clinton Dixon was born September 13, 1916 in Victoria, Texas to Odem and Myra (Hayes) Dixon. He passed away Thursday, September 10, 2009, at Trego Manor, WaKeeney at the age of 92.


As a young boy, John attended schools in Clifton, Arizona and graduated from Clifton High School. Later John went on to get his bachelor's degree from New Mexico State. After college he enlisted in the Navy, serving in WWII as an officer on the USS Phelps, USS Shikellamy, USS Tantalus, and USS Merapi. John was united in marriage to Laura Hillman, on June 11, 1948 in Lordsburg, NM.


After the war John worked for the Soil Conservation Service as a Soil Agronomist until retiring in 1971. He also retired from the Navy reserves as Commander.


John loved sporting events from baseball, football, golf and others. He loved the fishing and camping trips with his family, especially the ones to Long Draw Lake and Trappers Lake.


He was a past member of the Moose Lodge, the American Legion and VFW.


Survivors include his wife Laura of the home; one stepson, Jerald Russell of Ft. Collins, CO; six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren.


John was preceded in death by a stepson, Andy Russell in 1983.


John had a joy for his family and life. His memory will be cherished forever.


Graveside services for John were held Monday, September 14, 2009 in the Veterans' Cemetery at WaKeeney, KS with Pastor Randy Gibbs officiating.
