IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joel Patrick
Schroeder
March 7, 1969 – February 7, 2026
Joel Patrick Schroeder, 56, of Thoreau, New Mexico, passed away on February 7, 2026. He was born March 7, 1969, in Salina, Kansas, the son of Nicholas and Judy (Cooper) Schroeder. He was raised in Rawlins, Wyoming, where he graduated from Rawlins High School with the Class of 1987.
Joel devoted his life to faith, education, and service within the Catholic Church. His most recent position was Assistant Director of Support Services at St. Bonaventure Indian Mission and School, where he served with dedication and professionalism. In this role, he supported the operational and administrative needs of the mission and school, contributing to an environment that upheld both educational excellence and the mission's spiritual foundation. Joel worked tirelessly to initiate and coordinate numerous giveaways of essential goods that were donated to the Mission and given out to thousands of families in need. One of his favorite projects was the annual Christmas Dinner and Giveaway. He went above and beyond to ensure that the event was successful year after year, attending to the smallest details and beginning the planning months in advance. He was instrumental in building projects such as the building of a new gym that is now used for many events. He was a big supporter of the athletic programs and he applied for numerous grants that were awarded to the mission and school that will continue helping for years to come.
Prior to his work in New Mexico, Joel served for many years at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, beginning in 2011. There, he faithfully fulfilled multiple roles including Parish Business Manager, Director of Religious Education, Youth Minister, and Campus Minister at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. He oversaw parish finances and operations, managed budgeting and payroll, maintained facilities, and ensured compliance with Archdiocesan policies. Beyond administration, Joel was deeply engaged in parish life through ministry, prayer, and personal outreach.
As Director of Religious Education and Youth Minister, Joel supervised faith formation programs from pre-kindergarten through high school. He strengthened curriculum, increased participation, founded and expanded a vibrant high school youth program, and revitalized the Campus Ministry program after an eight-year absence, growing it into an active and welcoming presence for students.
Earlier in his vocation, Joel studied in the Franciscan Formation Program with the Order of Friars Minor in Chicago, reflecting his deep appreciation for Franciscan values of humility, compassion, and service.
From 2006 to 2008, Joel served at Leo Catholic High School in Chicago, Illinois, as Registrar, Assistant Dean of Students, Religion Instructor, and Consumer Education Instructor. In these roles, he supported student development, academic progress, faculty coordination, and accreditation efforts while mentoring students with patience and care.
Joel pursued his higher education at Fort Hays State University, where he studied Philosophy and Religious Studies, along with Computer Business and Management, and earned certification as a Computerized Accounting Specialist.
Throughout his life, Joel was known for his strong work ethic, thoughtful leadership, and unwavering commitment to serving others. His faith guided his actions, and his legacy lives on in the many students, parishioners, colleagues, and communities he served.
Joel was preceded in death by his father, Nicholas Patrick Schroeder, and his nephew, Elias Aidan Gonzales.
He is survived by his mother, Judy Schroeder, of WaKeeney, Kansas; his brother, Tom Schroeder (Darla) of Texhoma, Oklahoma; and his sisters, Sarah Albright (Jeff) of Tavares, Florida, and Rebecca Clemence (Stage) of Laramie, Wyoming.
