Obituary

Joel Dee Ohlemeier was born August 17, 1948, in Hays, KS, to Merlin and Della Jean (Cramer) Ohlemeier. He passed away September 16, 2011, in rural Rush County, KS, at the age of 63.

He graduated from Trego Community High School with the class of 1966. For many years, Joel managed Detroiter Mobile Homes in California, Michigan, Minnesota, and Hutchison, KS. He returned to Lawrence and received his Bachelor's Degree in business from University of Kansas. He taught calculus courses at KU. He then went to Fort Hays State University where he received a Master's Degree in Business and taught accounting courses to students. Later, Joel worked for a New York firm that trained small group teams how to analyze big company production lines and their personnel problems to help 'fine tune' their businesses.

On September 9, 1966, Joel married Betsy Hillman, the only girl he ever loved, in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at WaKeeney. Joel always told his mom that this marriage was forever. Betsy passed away February 28, 2005.

Joel's many interests and hobbies included online stock trading in commodities, fishing and hunting, especially with his brothers, collecting meteorites and glacier rocks, digging for fossils and Indian arrowheads, and writing poetry. In fact, he and his brother-in-law, Larry Smith, wrote a humorous book of poetry called "Gutter Poetry" which was published. He was also a skilled carpenter and was always ready to help with a building project or fixing an ailing vehicle. Joel treasured the times spent with his immediate and extended families. He was a patient teacher and an engaging storyteller about his fishing experiences.

A treasured friend of many, he is survived by his parents, Merlin and Della Ohlemeier, WaKeeney; a daughter, Jody Beth Riddle, Lawrence; two grandchildren, Trevor Lee and Tiffany Nichole Riddle; two brothers, Jerry Ohlemeier and wife, Teresa, Lawrence, and Jay Ohlemeier and wife, Maree, Hays; numerous nieces and nephews; and a dog, Midnight, a dog, Dozer, and three cats, Sister, Oreo, and Fuzzy.

His wife, Betsy; and a brother, Merlin Scott Ohlemeier, preceded him in death
