Jeanne Dorothy (Moore) Mann, age 96, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Oberlin on Saturday, May 16, 2026.
Jeanne was born November 4, 1929, in Grinnell to J.E. “Eddie” Moore and Gertrude (Schwartz) Moore. She was the second of ten children, raised in rural Kansas where family, hard work, and simple joys shaped her early years. Her father worked as a plumber, and her mother cared for their large household. Jeanne’s parents fostered in her a lifelong love of reading, and books, magazines, and newspapers were always within reach. That love stayed with her throughout her life.
On November 30, 1948, Jeanne married Mathew “Mat” Joseph Mann. Together they built a life on the family farm north of Quinter, where they raised six children. Jeanne and Mat enjoyed bowling and many family picnics, especially at favorite spots known as the Yellow Rocks and the Club Pond on the land they farmed and loved.
Jeanne devoted her life to her family as a wife, mother, and partner in the daily work of farm life. She also worked for several years at the Quinter Library, where her love of books found a natural home.
She had a gift for noticing life’s small treasures. Jeanne collected decorative hens nestled in baskets, admired but famously not to be touched. She raised chihuahuas and had a special affection for all animals. She loved going out to eat, not only for the meal but for the pleasure of watching the world around her. She treasured letters and cards from family and friends, enjoying every update, whether shared in handwritten notes or, occasionally, discovered through reading the local obituaries.
Her hands were rarely still. There was almost always knitting or crocheting in progress, and she loved tending her garden. Jeanne found joy in digging in the earth, growing food, and bringing it to the table, often recruiting visiting children into service to pick produce, shuck vegetables, or wage battle against garden pests. It was simply understood: if you were nearby, you were on the gardening crew.
Jeanne is survived by her children: Phil (Sherry) Mann, Karen Mann, Leland (Jeanne) Mann, Donna (James) Newton, and Kalo (Tammy) Mann; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members. She is survived by her siblings: Iris Peterson, Patrick Moore, and Michael Moore.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mathew “Mat” Mann; her son, Floyd Mann; her grandson, Zachary Mann; and her great-grandchildren, Heath Mann and Teegan Courtney. She was also preceded in death by her siblings John Moore, Joseph Moore, Gretchen (Moore) Truetken, Carol Moore, Helen (Moore) Neiman, and Priscilla Moore.
A viewing will be held at the Quinter Methodist Church, 218 W. 4th St., Quinter, Kansas, on Saturday, May 23, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Family and friends are also invited to gather for refreshments and fellowship at the church during that time. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the church, followed by burial at Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter, Kansas. Additional refreshments and fellowship will follow the graveside service at the church.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Moore Family Library in Grinnell or the Quinter Public Library and may be mailed to Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 N. 12th St., WaKeeney, KS 67672.
