Obituary

Ila Jolene Wirtz was born March 1, 1944 to Henry and Laura (Felke) Wirtz. She passed away May 1, 2011 in her home.

Ila attended Sacred Heart Grade School in Ness City, Kansas and graduated from Ness City High School in 1962.

Ila was involved in several women's groups: Helping Hands, Freya Club, and Sacred Heart Altar Society. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park, Kansas.

Ila was a devout wife and caring Mother. She spent many years raising her four children while helping her husband run their farm and business. Later in life she enjoyed traveling, especially to visit her grandchildren.

Ila had many diverse interests, which included: sewing, dancing, gardening and participating in archeological digs. She could be found sharing her life stories with her longtime friends. Her faith was a source of peace and strength for herself as well as others.

After her children were raised, Ila earned her CNA/CMA and worked at the Gove County Medical Center LTC Facility. This led her to a special calling in her life as "Grandma" to the foster boys at the Hope House. Ila will be fondly remembered by her family and friends for many years to come.

Survivors include her husband, Royce Chestnut of Quinter, four children, Una Richmeier and her husband, Edwin, of Quinter, Shelly Gaskill and her husband, Brian, of Salina, Douglas Martin and his wife, Amanda, of Kansas City, and Rise' Handley and her husband, Brad, of Overland Park; six grandchildren, Patrick and Randy Richmeier of Quinter, Zachary and Luke Gaskill of Salina, and Elise and Jeret Handley of Overland Park.

She was preceded in death by her parents and late husband, Maurice.

Mass of Christian Burial is planned for Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father James Thomas officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Catholic Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 3, 2011 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m at the funeral home with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Hope House or Quinter Fitness Center and may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 901 S. Main, Quinter, KS 67752.
