Herman Joseph Flax was born October 3, 1935, in Arnold, KS, to the late Godfried and Catherine (Weber) Flax. He passed away Sunday, November 15, 2009, in the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital at WaKeeney at the age of 74.
Herman attended Lonestar School in rural Trego County.
On August 3, 1959, he was united in marriage to Joan Graf in Schoenchen, KS. Herman farmed and raised cattle in the Arnold area for many years. He retired from farming in 2005 and moved to WaKeeney, but his heart was always out farming with the boys.
Herman was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in WaKeeney. His hobbies included vegetable and flower gardening. Herman was a firm supporter in his boy's activities at school. That family devotion was also passed on to his grandchildren, as he thoroughly felt blessed to spend a few years with them.
Survivors include his wife, Joan of WaKeeney; six sons, Kenny and his wife, Elaine, of Gove, Terry and wife, Troyette, Kevin Flax, all of Ransom, Brad and wife, Barbie, Jeff and wife, Michele, all of Dodge City, Brian and wife, Ashley, of Lindsborg; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Ignatius of Hays, Leonard and wife, Irene, of Wright, Lawrence and wife, Betty, of Dodge City, and Father Myron Flax of Colorado Springs, CO; two sisters, Helen Shuler of Ness City and Sister Mary Ann Flax of Lexington, NE.
Preceding him in death were two brothers, an infant brother, Paul, and Eugene Flax; a sister, Rose Flax; and a great-grandson, Takota Schurr.
Services for Herman will be held Thursday, November 19, 2009, at 10:30 AM in Christ the King Catholic Church at WaKeeney, KS with Father Donald Pfannenstiel and Father Myron Flax officiating. Graveside service will be held 2:30 PM in the Ransom Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, 5:00-6:30 PM at Schmitt Funeral Home and a Vigil Service at 6:30 PM.
