Obituary

The bright light of her family dimmed on January 1, 2026, when Glenna "Jean" Hafenstine passed away peacefully at Trego County–Lemke Memorial Hospital at the age of 97.

She was born August 23, 1928, in Quinter, Kansas, to Reuben and Blanche (Benson) Shelley. Jean graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1946.

On June 20, 1948, Jean was united in marriage to Dwayne Zeman in WaKeeney. From this marriage, four children were born: Douglas, Jolanda, Mark, and Dwana. Jean later married Walter Hafenstine on August 7, 1979. Dwayne preceded her in death on August 6, 1986, and Walter preceded her in death on July 5, 1992.

Jean bowled on a league for many years and was known as a talented bowler. She also volunteered at the WaKeeney Food Pantry. Above all, Jean cherished her family. Being a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother was the most important part of her life.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Reuben and Blanche Shelley; her husbands, Dwayne Zeman and Walter Hafenstine; her son, Douglas Zeman; daughter-in-law, Russella Zeman; grandson, Jeffery Simpson; stepson, Rex Hafenstine; stepdaughter, Faye Weilert; brothers, Edgar Shelley and Walter Shelley; sister, Ina Cantwell; and infant siblings, Erlin, Verlin, Phillip Shelley, and Alice Jo Shelley.

She is survived by her son, Mark (Deanna) Zeman of WaKeeney; and her daughters, Jolanda Zeman of WaKeeney and Dwana (Kendal) Zahn of WaKeeney. She is also survived by her grandsons, Bill Zeman, Bobby Zeman, and Kenny Zahn; and her granddaughters, Michelle Ghumm, Jennifer Hildreth, Kaleena Zahn, Kilee Zeman, and Addie Crist. Her great-grandsons include Joey Zeman, Coltin Ghumm, Torrin Birch, Oliver Zeman, Eliot Zeman, and Ryan Hildreth, and her great-granddaughters include Megan Zeman, Taylor Schoenthaler, Nichole Hildreth, Elena Johnson, Brinlee Zeman, Arya Zahn, Evie Zahn, Sophia Zahn, Ani Zeman, and Emersynn Zeman. She is further survived by her great-great-grandsons, Kordae Jackson, Kornell Jackson, Kameron Jackson, Noah Ghumm, Cass Huffman, and Brock Schoenthaler, and her great-great-granddaughter, Kaori Jackson.

Jean is also survived by her stepchildren, Doug Hafenstine and Betty Hafenstine, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
