Glenn Richard Hladek was born September 19, 1919, in rural Trego County, KS, to the late James and Ella (Cikanek) Hladek. He passed away Thursday, January 7, 2010, in the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital at the age of 90.
As a child, he attended rural elementary school in Collyer and graduated from Collyer High School with the class of 1936. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from January 1942 until December 7, 1945.
On December 21, 1945, Glenn was united in marriage to Cora Michaelis in the Presbyterian Church at WaKeeney. He worked as a parts manager for a Chevrolet Dealership in WaKeeney. In 1953, Glenn and Cora purchased the Y-Drive In Movie Theatre and made it a family-run business - Glenn sold tickets, Glenn Allen ran the projector and Cora, Janet, and Larry ran the concession stand.
Glenn was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Randall Reid VFW Post #3449, the American Legion Moore Post #197, WaKeeney Lions Club, and the Bohemian Fraternal Organization.
For over twenty-three years, Glenn and Cora looked forward to their annual trip to the sun in Yuma, AZ. They traveled and camped with the family covering the entire United States and Canada. In earlier years, they loved to dance, especially to the big band sounds of the 50's which included Glen Miller. Other hobbies included fishing and horseshoe pitching. Even at 80 years of age, Glenn was winning matches against much younger horseshoe pitchers.
Survivors include his wife, Cora, of WaKeeney; two sons, Larry D. Hladek and wife, Irma, of Parkville, MO, Glenn A. Hladek and Jeanne Twohig, of Missoula, MT; six grandchildren, Tricia Hladek, Alicia Smith and husband, Tyler, BriAnna Cosner and husband, Dennis, Jeff McEntarfer and wife, Erin, Jeremy McEntarfer, and wife, Faira, Dustin McEntarfer and wife, Sally; a special family friend, Jason Harold; and four great-grandchildren, Keegan Yates, Dylan, Drew, and Lincoln McEntarfer.
Preceding him in death was a daughter, Janet Kay McEntarfer; and two brothers, Archie and Walter Hladek.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, January 11, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Schmitt Funeral Home in WaKeeney, KS. Inurnment is in the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at a later date.
