Obituary

Gladys Mae Austin was born December 6, 1927, in Russell, KS, to the late George and Eva (Bennett) Lindsay. She passed away Sunday, December 18, 2011, in the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital at WaKeeney at the age of 84.


She graduated from Morland High School. On June 8, 1946, Gladys was united in marriage to Claude Austin, Jr. in Hays, KS.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the American Legion Moore Post #197 Auxiliary, both in WaKeeney.


During her spare time, Gladys enjoyed walking. Her hobbies included crocheting, gardening and crafts.


A treasured friend of many, Gladys is survived by her husband, Claude of the home; a daughter, Candace Austin of WaKeeney; a son, Rodney Austin of Salina; a grandson, Travis Rothe of Ness City; a brother, Duane Lindsay and wife, Maxine, of Hays; and four sisters, Grace Dyer of Lompoc, CA, Mary Wolford of Lincoln, KS, Jane Lindenman of Hill City, Ann Newcomer and husband, Duane, of WaKeeney; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Lloyd Lindsay; and two sisters, Erma Talburt and Verna Noel.

Visitation is 1-2 PM, Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at the Schmitt Funeral Home in WaKeeney with Funeral Services at 2:00 PM with Pastor Deb Harvey officiating. A private interment will be later in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.
