Obituary

Frieda Waldman was born the third child of John and Susanna (Herman) Holzmeister on July 27, 1920 in Bison, KS. She passed away Monday, March 1, 2010, in the Gove County Medical Center at Quinter at the age of 89.


The name Frieda (meaning freedom) was given to her to commemorate the end of World War I. She graduated from eighth grade at Sunflower School District 56. Frieda did not attend high school, as she was needed at home to help care for her family.


She was united in marriage to Carl Headrick on October 15, 1943 at St. Mary's in Loretta, KS. They made their home in Wichita, KS, where she worked at Cessna Aircraft during WWII. Carl died in an airplane accident on March 9, 1947, and eight days later, their daughter, Carlene Jo was born. That fall, Frieda attended cosmetology school and worked as a beautician from 1947-1951 in WaKeeney, KS.

Frieda married George Waldman, Jr. on April 9, 1951 at Sacred Heart Church in Park, KS. He preceded her in death on October 2, 1985.


Survivors include her five daughters, Sister Carlene Jo Headrick, SFCC. Grand Island, NE, Georgene Light and husband, Paul, Kansas City, MO, Jolene Schuster and husband, Roger, Grainfield, KS, Connie Kahm and husband, Steve, Kansas City, MO, and Merna Zerr and husband, Farrel, Park, KS; fifteen grandchildren, Shannon Robben (Katie), Nicole Hermanson (Adam), Heather Flavin (Tyler), Angela Smith (Andy), Justin Schuster (Emily) Jerrod Schuster (Alison Latta), Gregory Schuster, Stacy Schuster, Jeremy Kahm (Christine), Ryan Kahm (Jamie), Emily Kahm, Amanda Pfannenstiel (Calvin), Douglas Zerr, Jeffrey Zerr, Bradley Zerr; seventeen great-grandchildren; four brothers, Lawrence, Hubert and wife, Eleanora, all of Quinter, Edwin and wife, Darlene, Hays, Abraham and wife, Pauline, Salina; a sister, Josephine Kuntz, Quinter; and a sister-in-law, Genevieve Holzmeister, Oakley.


Preceding her in death was an infant daughter; her parents, John and Susanna; brothers, Arnold, Sylvester, and Arone; sisters-in-law, Frances and Joseph Holzmeister; and a brother-in-law, Nicholas Kuntz.


Frieda was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Altar Society, Family Ministry Team, all of Park, KS. She was also a member of the Grainfield St. Agnes Christian Mothers and the American Legion Auxiliary.


She loved her vocation as a homemaker, including baking, embroidery, and needle work. Frieda had many gifts. Her gift of hospitality made young and old alike, feel welcome and valued. She lived her life as a peacemaker and prayer warrior, and in love, she did all things. She was a precious gift to us.

Visitation is 5-6 and 7-8 PM on Thursday at Schmitt Funeral Home in Quinter with vigil services at 6 PM.

Services for Frieda will be held Friday, March 5, 2010 at 10:30 AM in Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Park, KS.
