Obituary

Fern Laurain Bennett was born March 4, 1926, on a farm eight miles north of Hudson, KS. She was the fifth of eleven children born to the late Karl Phillip and Mary Crystal (Coleman) Koestel. She passed away Monday, May 23, 2011, in the Derby Health and Rehabilitation Center at Derby, KS, at the age of 85.


She attended schools in Horace, KS, and graduated from Greeley County High School in Tribune with the class of 1944.


On July 7, 1944, Fern was united in marriage to Donald E. Bennett in San Diego, CA. They resided in Ellis until moving to WaKeeney in 1962. As an adult, Fern worked in all positions in a restaurant. She also operated a steakhouse and a 'hamburger joint' for some time. She worked as head cook at Trego Community High School in WaKeeney and later was promoted to Food Service Director for Unified School District 208.


Fern was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Randall Reid VFW Auxiliary #3449, American Legion Moore Post #197, and a past member of the Miriam Rebekah Lodge #465, all in WaKeeney.

Fern enjoyed her retirement years and filled the hours by gardening, quilting, and making baby blankets for her grandchildren.


Those left to mourn her passing are her children, Donald E. Bennett, Jr. and wife, Diane, of Valley Center, David L. Bennett and wife, Josie, of Mulvane, Linda L. Jones and husband, Virgil, of Colby; eight grandchildren, Devria Long and husband, Jack, Dawnele Taylor and husband, Chris, Laura Bennett, Lisa Bennett, Leslie Bennett, Lindsay Bennett, Erin Jones, Rebecca Haugaard and husband, Ryan; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Phillip Koestel, of Tucson, AZ; and three sisters, Pearl Harris of Tribune, Vera Dinkel of Mesquite, NV, and Norma Todd of Alliance, NE.

Her husband, Don; four brothers, Ervin, Leonard, Lyle, and Gilbert Koestel; and two sisters, Edith Kinderknecht and Edna Smith preceded her in death.

Funeral Services for Fern will be 11:00 AM, Friday, May 27, 2011 in the First United Methodist Church at WaKeeney, KS. No visitation is planned. Interment is in Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at WaKeeney.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church or Walk-A-Thon For Health and may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 N 12th, WaKeeney, KS 67672.
