Longtime WaKeeney area resident, Edwin Schmeidler, passed away Monday, July 8, 2013 at Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit. He was 87 years of age. Edwin was born May 13, 1926, on the farm near Severin in Ellis County, the son of Anton and Anna (Sander) Schmeidler.
On May 29, 1954, Edwin was united in marriage to Alfreda Pfeifer at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. They enjoyed 59 years of marriage together. Edwin was proud to have been a farmer and rancher his entire adult life. He was very mechanically inclined, having the ability to fix nearly anything that was broken around the farm. He was a member of Christ The King Catholic Church of WaKeeney and the Knights of Columbus, having achieved his 4th degree status as a Knight. Edwin served our country during the Korean Conflict and was a lifetime member of the VFW. He cherished his time with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Edwin is survived by his wife, Alfreda; two children Edwin Schmeidler, Jr. of WaKeeney and Kay and husband Bill Linden of Ellinwood; three brothers Ralph and wife Elsie of Ogallah, Lawrence and wife Dolores of Catharine, and Anton, Jr. of Hays; four sisters Sophia Walter of Catharine, Lillian and husband Victor Fisher of Hays, Anna Marie and husband LaVerne Lessor of Great Bend, and Gloria Ann and husband Bob VonLintel of Victoria; four grandchildren Travis, Derek and wife Angie, Katie, and Ethan Linden; two great-grandchildren Hayden and Connor Linden; and one step-great-grandchild Jordon Brough. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Irene Dreiling.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 12, 2013 at Christ the King Catholic Church with Father Charles Steier as celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A parish vigil service will follow visitation at 7:00 p.m., also at the funeral home. A Fourth Degree rosary will follow the parish vigil service.
