Obituary

Duane Earl Hearting was born November 16, 1954, in Hays, KS, to Kenneth and Carol (Sunley) Hearting. He passed away Saturday, March 26, 2011, at his home in Ogallah, KS, at the age of 56.


He attended schools in WaKeeney and graduated from Trego Community High School in 1972. He received his associate's degree from Cowley County Vo-Tech in Arkansas City, KS.

On May 27, 1978 Duane married Susan Malsom in Christ the King Catholic Church at WaKeeney. He was involved in running the family business, K-Hearting Amusement Company in WaKeeney.

Duane was a member of the German Shorthair Pointer Club. His hobbies included hunting, electronics, working on automobiles, and working with dogs and game birds.



Susan Gail Hearting was born April 16, 1959, in WaKeeney, KS, to the late George and Barbara (Richmeier) Malsom. She passed away at her home, March 26, 2011, at the age of 51.

She attended schools in WaKeeney and graduated from Trego Community High School with the class of 1977.


On May 27, 1978, Susan was united in marriage to Duane Hearting in Christ the King Catholic Church at WaKeeney. She worked as a bookkeeper for Frontier Ag in WaKeeney.

Susan was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in WaKeeney. Susan enjoyed woodworking, jewelry crafting, painting, photography, and gardening.


Duane and Susan are survived by their children; Lisa Hearting of Las Vegas, NV, Brandy Althouse and husband, Brett, of Clearwater, Wade Hearting and wife, Chelsea, of Lenexa. Other survivors include Duane's mother, Carol Hearting of WaKeeney; his brothers, Russell Hearting and wife, Jeanice, of WaKeeney, Richard Hearting and wife, Judy, of Collyer; his sisters, Margaret Wahlborg and husband, Elgin, of Arkansas City, and Barbara Richter and husband, Stephen, of McLean, VA; Susan's brothers, Dennis Malsom and wife, Lisa, of Goodland, Bill Malsom of Bartlesville, OK; and her sister, Donna Schmitt and husband, Myron, of Liberty, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Duane's father, Kenneth Hearting and Susan's parents, George and Barbara Malsom, preceded them in death.

Family will receive friends 6:30-7:30 PM Friday, April 1, 2011 at Schmitt Funeral Home in WaKeeney with a memorial service to be held at 7:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Duane & Susan Memorial Fund and can be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 N 12th, WaKeeney, KS 67672.
