IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Donald L.
Schultz
January 8, 1937 – July 5, 2017
Donald Lane Schultz, age 80, of Grainfield, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Sheridan County Long Term Care. He was born January 8, 1937, in Stafford, KS, to Charles Monroe and Mabel Arlene (Staats) Schultz.
Donald attended Sylvia schools graduating from Sylvia High School in 1955. Attending and graduating from Fort Hays State College in 1959, Donald ran track, completed a BS degree in Agriculture, and met Mary Louise Johnson while working as a busboy in the dorm.
On June 2, 1959, Donald was united in marriage to Mary Louise Johnson at the Christian Church in Oakley. After marriage, Don taught Science and Mathematics at Selden High School and was an assistant coach for all high school boys sports. Farming was always his first love so he moved to a farm northwest of Grainfield with Louise and their oldest one-year-old son Darren Lane who was born while Don was teaching at Selden. After moving to Grainfield two more sons were born, Douglas L. and Daniel L. The young family soon outgrew the 2 bedroom trailer they were living in so they moved a two story brick home (formerly Louise's Grandma Johnson's home) from Russell. Don helped by riding on the roof helping Western Cooperative Electric lineman raise the power lines to allow the house to move under.
Donald was very involved in his community. He was a member of and past president of many organizations, including the Western Cooperative Electric Board, Kansas Electric Cooperative Board, NC+ Seed dealer and chairman of the Grainfield United Methodist Board. Don was very active in his church, helping dismantle the old parsonage and build the new one in 1972, installing the lift and many remodeling jobs. Don's real passion was building and growing the farm with his three sons, planting, irrigating, harvesting, delivering calves, gathering eggs, working endless hours as all farmers who love the land do. Don cherished his family. Whenever his children and grandchildren had a school and or community event, you could count on seeing Don and Louise there to support them. Traveling with Louise was also a highlight for Don.
Survivors include his wife of the family home; three sons, Darren Schultz and Gwen Urban of Grainfield, Doug (Ronna) Schultz of Grainfield, Daniel (Joan) Schultz of Grainfield; five grandchildren Cas Schultz, Ty Schultz, Zoe Schultz, Livia Schultz and Tyra Schultz of Grainfield; one brother, Gary (Ronita) Schultz of Overland Park.
He was preceded in death by infant brother, Jimmy Schultz; parents; brother Charles Robert (Bob) Schultz; and Grandson Dal Brean Schultz.
