Darlene Marie Burbach was born September 28, 1930, in Greeley, KS. She was the oldest of eight children born to the late Huldrich and Velma (Tippin) Winter. She passed away Saturday, June 19, 2010 in the Trego Manor at WaKeeney, KS.
As a child, she attended schools in Kersey and LaSalle, CO and graduated from Fort Hays State University with a teaching degree.
On August 6, 1950, Darlene married Warren Burbach in LaSalle, CO. They made their home on a farm south of Collyer and later moved to Quinter and then retired in WaKeeney.
She taught at Banner and Hackberry country schools and later taught 5th and 6th grades at Quinter until retiring. Her love for teaching was recognized locally and statewide by being awarded State Teacher of the Year and her name was inducted into the Quinter Teacher Hall of Fame. Darlene was active in the KNEA and she held elected offices at local and state levels. She was also a member of the Quinter United Methodist Church and Literary Club. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and quilting. She loved the mountains and Darlene and Warren built a retirement cabin in the Walsenburg, CO area which they visited often.
Those left to mourn her passing are her husband, Warren; two sons, Tim and wife, Deanna, of WaKeeney, Rick and wife Laurita, of Collyer; a daughter, Sandra Burbach of Hays; five grandchildren, Shawn and Trent Burbach, Jeremiah Burbach, Rhea Mader, Darsha Whorton; a step-grandchild, Corina Knoll; eleven great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Winters of Denver, CO, Ronnie Winters and wife, Kathy, of Santa Anna, TX; two sisters, Joy Schott, Charlene Bickhaus and husband, Tom, all of LaSalle, CO; and two brothers-in-law, Marvin Cogswell of Greeley, CO, and John Shultz of Farmington, NM.
Preceding her in death were three sisters, Gay Cogswell, Mary Hodson and Donna Shultz.
Darlene M. Burbach, age 79, died early Saturday morning, June 19, 2010 at Trego Manor in WaKeeney. Services are Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at Schmitt Funerral Home in WaKeeney at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Randy Gibbs officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Collyer Union Cemetery at a later date.
