Cathy Jane (C.J.) Leighton, age 61, died Saturday, April 9, 2011, at the Gove County Medical Center in Quinter, KS, after long courageous battles with cancer.
Cathy was born January 8, 1950 in Colby, KS to Harold Lockard and Eileen (Layton) Rhea. She attended Oakley schools, graduating with the class of 1968. She attended cosmetology school in Hays and was the owner and operator of C. J.'s Cuttin' Corner, originating in Garden City and then moving to Quinter. She had worked at Co-Ag fertilizer plant and was serving as the director of the Gove County Senior Center at the time of her illness.
Cathy was married to Samuel Herbel in 1976. They divorced. She and Yancy Foster Leighton were married March 24, 1979, in Gove, KS. They are the parents of Taos Lee Leighton.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and UMW in Quinter and a life member of the VFW Auxiliary, Post #2981 in Oakley. As an active member of the Gove County Historical Society, she was instrumental in locating and marking several soldiers' graves in Gove County. Cathy was also a member of the Butterfield Trail Association, and the High Plains Preservation of History Association.
She is survived by her husband, Yancy, of the home; a son, Taos, of Quinter; and two step-children, Tiffany Al-Deek and Shane Blue Leighton, both of Arizona. She is also survived by her mother, Eileen Rhea, Oakley; three sisters, Patricia Stockham and husband, Glenn, of Garden City, Nancy Howard, Garden City, Julie Flores and husband, John, Gardner; a brother Marshall Rhea and wife, Julie, Oakley; four step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father; two brothers, Stuart and Jeffery Rhea; and a nephew, Shannon Schmidt.
C. J. loved her family dearly. She was an exceptional seamstress. Her many talents included gardening, canning and jelly making, doing needlework and furniture restoration, and watching NASCAR racing and rodeos.
Visitation will be 5:30-8:00 PM Monday, April 11, 2011 at Schmitt Funeral Home and Funeral Services will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, April 12, 2011 in the United Methodist Church at Quinter, KS.
