Ben and Hildagard remained on the family farm where he farmed and worked cattle. Ben enjoyed woodworking and later built his own home in Grainfield where they lived during their retirement. He also loved to garden and 'tinkered' in his yard regularly. He even worked for three years building his own television.

He was a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion George M. Scott Post #301, where he continually volunteered for Bingo and worked stag suppers.
