Arthur Lee Hilzer was born August 3, 1929, in Grover, CO, to the late Henry and Esther (Lear) Hilzer. He passed away Thursday, April 15, 2010, in the Gove County Medical Center at Quinter, KS at the age of 80.
He was raised on a farm in Grover, CO and later served in the United States Navy.
In his early years, Art farmed and also owned and operated the Arjo Kennels for over twenty-five years. He later managed the elevators in Grover, CO, Pine Bluffs, WY, Imperial, NE, and Quinter, KS.
On June 1, 1952, Art married Donna Lou Sharp in Grover, CO. She passed away May 21, 1983. He married Joan (Wilson) McCullough on September 1, 1984 in Grinnell.
Arthur was a member of the Wheatland VFW Post #2864 in Grinnell, the American Legion George M. Scott Post #301 in Grainfield, and served on the city council in Park. His passions were racing his greyhounds and elk hunting every year with his friends. He also enjoyed helping with the Park rodeo every year. Art treasured the times spent with his grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters Leda Hilzer of Bakersfield, CA, Charlotte Lucas and husband, Dennis of Wauneta, NE; a step-son, Mikel McCullough, of Charlotte, NC; two step-daughters, Da'Nella Anderson and husband, Jeff, of Topeka, Sheryl Johnson and husband, Steve, of Oakley; four grandchildren, Chad Lucas, Michael and Brandy Wixom, Diane Nolan; four step-grandchildren, Erin and Kyle Anderson, Brett and Brook Suter; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Marvin Hilzer and wife, Vi, of Casper, WY; and two sisters, Shirley Allen and husband, Don, of Denver, CO, and Norlene Bates and husband
Visitation for Art will be held Monday, April 19, 2010, from 1:00 PM until time of service at 3:00 PM. in Schmitt Funeral Home at Quinter, KS.
Burial will be Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 10:00 AM Mountain time at Mount Hope Cemetery in Imperial, NE.
