Gove area resident, Arnold Wesley Prather, passed away Monday, December 23, 2013 at Hays Medical Center. He was born April 9, 1932, in Longacre, West Virginia, the son of Earl Sylvester and Lola Maude (Richardson) Prather.
Arnold was a United States Army veteran, having served our country during the Korean Conflict. He was wounded during the war, and received a Purple Heart. On June 8, 1952, Arnold married Opal M. Evans. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage together. Opal survives of the family home. Arnold was very involved in many organizations. Some of those include: VFW (past post and area commander), the American Legion, the 17th Infantry Association (served as an officer), Gove County Commissioner for 3 terms, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Northwest Kansas Planning and Development (past president), Gove Community Bible Church (honorary Elder), and many more.
Arnold will be missed by many friends and family. Survivors include: his wife, Opal; 2 sons, William Earl (Kathleen) Prather, and Jeffrey Arnold (Linda) Prather, both of Gove; a daughter, Tomaye Hipp (Randy Ladenburger) of Oakley; a brother, Lewis (Bonnie) Prather of Charleston, West Virginia; a sister Ruth Ann Prather of Sissonville, West Virginia; 7 grandchildren, Heather (Trevor) Henderson, Traci (Matt) Taylor, Jay Hipp, Garth Prather, Clinton Prather, Lance Prather, and Megan (Brady) Alexander; 4 great-grandchildren, Alyssa Helpingstine, Lola Hipp, Wesley Taylor, and Garrett Keal. He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers Kenneth, Verleigh, and Gerald; and 2 sisters Leola and Norma.
There will be a military service for Arnold Prather on Friday, Dec. 27th, starting at 10 a.m. at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in WaKeeney. The public is invited.

On Saturday, December 28, there will be a Memorial Service for him at the Gove Community Bible Church at 2 p.m. Refreshments will follow in fellowship hall.
