Obituary

Arleen Mae (Priefert) Yale, age 92, of Grainfield, died Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, WaKeeney. She was born March 2, 1923, at the home of her parents, August E. and Lilly May (Eickmann) Priefert, southwest of Gove City. She attended and graduated from Gove Grade School in 1937, and Gove High School in 1941. She then attended Fort Hays State College for one year from 1941 to 1942. Since it was during World War II, and there was shortage of teachers, she was able to start teaching with a teacher's certificate.

Her first teaching assignment was at East Big Creek country school. While she was teaching there, she was introduced to a young farmer that lived a little more than a mile away. His name was Wayne Yale. Arleen taught 1st through 8th grades in the one room country school for three years, boarding at a home ¼ mile north of the school. When her parents' farm, south of Gove, was being used as a gunnery range during World War II, she and her parents moved to Grainfield. At Grainfield Grade School, she taught 3rd and 4th grades.

On June 1, 1947, Arleen Priefert married Wayne Yale at the WaKeeney Methodist Church. To this union were born three daughters, Lucille, Doris, and Dorothy.

Arleen was a devoted wife, loving mother, and helpful hand for any task on the farm. She was also an avid gardener, excellent homemaker, and a meticulous record keeper. Later on, she worked as a bookkeeper for MidWest Cooperative for 20 years. She played a very instrumental role as Secretary/Treasurer, and later, Manager, at the Gove County Credit Union. Arleen absolutely enjoyed traveling and seeing the world. She was very involved as a member of the Grainfield United Methodist Church, having held all offices on the church board. She was also a Sunday school superintendent and teacher for many years. Arleen also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star (having held all stations), and the VFW Auxiliary.

Arleen is survived by her husband; two daughters, Lucille and husband Kenneth Williams of Hays, and Dorothy and husband Kirby Mollenkamp of WaKeeney; four grandchildren, Julie (Brian) Fischer, Clinton Williams (Christine Huskey), Douglas (Jennifer) Burgardt, and Austin (Lindsey) Burgardt; five great-grandchildren, Nathan and Natalie Fischer, Jacob and Kaleb Burgardt, and Jayci Burgardt; and three step-grandchildren, LaTrisha (Chad) Flax, Stacy (Ben) Hudson, and Kelsey Jo (Eric) Brown, and families. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Doris Yale; brother, August Priefert, Jr., and his wife, Betty.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Grainfield United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Grainfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Quinter.

Memorials are suggested to the Grainfield Methodist Church, or the Arleen and Wayne Yale FHSU Scholarship Fund. Checks made to the organization may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 901 South Main, Quinter, KS 67752.
