Obituary

Alfreda Schmeidler, age 88, of WaKeeney passed away Monday, January 13, 2014 at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital of WaKeeney. She was a longtime WaKeeney area resident. She was born January 14, 1925 in Hays, the daughter of Peter and Catherine (Unrein) Pfeifer.

On May 29, 1954, Alfreda was united in marriage to Edwin Schmeidler at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. They enjoyed 59 years of marriage together. Edwin preceded Alfreda in death on July 8, 2013. She graduated from Hays High School in 1944. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and Altar Society in WaKeeney. Alfreda was a bus driver for ten years. She was a proud homemaker and farmwife. Known for her skills in the kitchen, Alfreda was an excellent baker and always had food available for the surprise guest. Most of the ingredients often came from right there on the farm. She always grew a large vegetable garden, had farm fresh eggs, and plenty of noodles made ahead. Using those cooking skills outside the home, Alfreda worked for a short time at the sale barn, and helped prepare countless wedding and funeral dinners with the ladies of the Altar Society. She cherished her time with family; especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a talented pianist. She was known for playing and singing with family members just for fun around the house. She was especially proud of a dulcimer that her dad made for her; it was one of her favorite instruments to play. Alfreda was a very tidy and organized person. Her house was always immaculate. It was not uncommon to find Alfreda and Edwin on the dance floor, dancing to a familiar polka or waltz tune. She will be missed by many.

Alfreda is survived by two children, Edwin Schmeidler, Jr. of WaKeeney and Kay and husband Bill Linden of Ellinwood; four grandchildren Travis, Derek and wife Angie, Katie, and Ethan Linden; two great-grandchildren Hayden and Connor Linden; and one step-great-grandchild Jordon Brough; two brothers, Robert and Peter V. Pfeifer, both of Hays; two sisters Florence Kuhn of Hays and Venita Collier of Lakewood, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin; three sisters Agnes Kreutzer, Regina Arnhold, and Martina Kreutzer; and a brother Wilfred "Jim" Pfeifer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 17, 2014 at Christ the King Catholic Church with Father Charles Steier as celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A parish vigil service will follow visitation at 7:00 p.m., also at the funeral home. A rosary will follow the parish vigil service.
