Obituary

Agnes Pfannenstiel was born August 31, 1919, on a farm SW of Ellis in Trego County, KS, the third child born to the late Henry and Walburga (Weigel) Gerber, Jr. She passed away Monday, August 9, 2010, in the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney at the age of 90.

She attended St. Mary's Catholic Parochial School in Ellis. Agnes worked for Dr. Lecuyer in Ellis until she married.


On September 19, 1938, she married Marcellus 'Mark' Pfannenstiel in Antonino, KS. They lived in Elgin, IL, where she worked at the Elgin Watch Factory until WWII started. They then moved to Wichita and she worked for the Safeway Grocery Company. In 1948, they moved to the farm SW of Ellis where she was born and in 1961, they moved to WaKeeney but continued to farm until 1984. She worked for the WaKeeney Bakery and the WaKeeney Grade School Lunch Program until retiring in 1980. Agnes and Mark traveled extensively after retirement. Mark passed away August 27, 2000.

Agnes was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church serving as secretary for ten years, and Altar Society, serving as treasurer for ten years. She was known as the 'Film Lady' because she headed the film program for the CCD classes for many years. She was also a member of the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Randall Reid VFW Post #3449 Auxiliary, all in WaKeeney, the St. Gilbert Daughters of Isabella, in Ellis, the Ellis County Historical Museum in Hays, a life member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia of Lincoln, NE, and the Sunflower Chapter of AHSGR of Hays.


She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mark; and three brothers, Ted, Killian, and Gilbert Gerber; and a sister, Margaret Holton.

Survivors include a brother, William Gerber and wife, Armella, of Arvada, CO; and a sister, Alvina Honas of Indianapolis, IN.


Agnes and Mark were not blessed with children, but were both father and mother, aunt and uncle to ever so many nieces, nephews and neighbor children.

Visitation for Agnes will be 5:30-7:00 PM with a Vigil Service at 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at Schmitt Funeral Home in WaKeeney. Services will be 10:00 AM Friday in Christ the King Catholic Church at WaKeeney with interment in St. Mary's Cemetery at Ellis, KS.
