Agnes Rose Gassmann, 95 of LeMars, IA, formerly of Grainfield, KS passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2010, in the Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars, IA.
Agnes was born September 16, 1914, in Callender, IA, to the late Anton and Agnes (Machovec) Barta. She attended county school near Callender, IA, and went on to Moorland High School in Moorland, IA. On February 27, 1935, she married LaVerne Quick. They had one daughter, Bernadeen Agnes (Quick) McWilliams of LeMars.
In 1941, she moved to San Diego, CA, to work in a defense plant. She later moved to Grinnell, KS, where she met and married Robert Gassmann on October 11, 1949. They farmed in Kansas and moved back to California in 1957. Following Robert's retirement in 1980, they moved back to Kansas and built their home in Grainfield.
Agnes was a housewife who enjoyed golfing, sewing, playing cards, and in later years, visiting her daughter, Bernadeen, and grandchildren in the LeMars area. Agnes was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, St. Agnes Ladies Group, and the American Legion George M. Scott Post #301 Auxiliary in Grainfield.
She is survived by her daughter, Bernadeen McWilliams; her grandchildren, Diane (McWilliams) and husband, Kenneth Hay, Hinton, IA, David McWilliams and wife, Marrae, Tucson, AZ, Doreen (McWilliams) and husband, Don Hill, Douglas, WY; her great-grandchildren, Tyler (enroute to Afghanistan) and wife, Kellie McWilliams, Dike, IA, Brandy McWilliams, LeMars, IA, Drew McWilliams, Tucson, AZ, Dr. Danielle Hay and Husband Kyle Miller, Columbus, OH, Nicholas Hay, Ames, IA, and Maggie Hay, Indianola, IA; and a brother, Floyd Barta, Callender, IA. A great-great-grandchild is expected by Tyler and Kelli McWilliams in October.
Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Agnes Barta; her husband, Robert Gassmann; a brother, Thomas Barta; two sisters, Helen Harklau and Mayme Konvalinka; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Barta; a son-in-law, Charles McWilliams; and a great-granddaughter, Debbie McWilliams.
Visitation for Agnes will be 6-7:30 PM Friday in the St. Agnes Educational Center in Grainfield, KS with vigil service at 7:30. Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, September 18, 2010 in St. Agnes Catholic Church.
