Mary Ellen “Nell” (Grant) Hein, age 90, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at her home in Quinter, KS. She was born to Arthur S. and Celia M. (Bell) Grant on November 29, 1922 in Inverell, New South Wales, Australia.
Nell was the youngest of 4 children. She grew up in the Inverell and Brisbane area where she loved to visit the beach, ride horses and was known to have a passion for literature. She also loved writing short stories, and tackling crossword puzzles. After graduating high school, she joined the Women's Australian Air Force (WAAF) where she was a teletype operator during WWII. In 1945, while stationed at Archerfield Air Force Base in Brisbane, Australia, she met and married Walter A. Hein.
In 1946, Nell traveled to the United States aboard the USS Monterey to begin her life in America. For many years Nell resided in Grainfield where she raised 13 children. It was to these children that she gave unbridled love and guidance. She was a fiercely proud and selfless woman who gave her life to her children and grandchildren, instilling her strong moral values, which provided a good foundation for life and life’s lessons. She was always known to be a gracious hostess and there was never a time when you entered her home that you weren’t asked to sit down to a hot meal, a sandwich, dessert, and of course a hot cup of tea. She took great pride in providing food, shelter, and clothing to anyone in need.
She became a CNA at Gove County Long Term Care Facility in the late 1970’s where she thoroughly enjoyed her time caring for and interacting with the residents. After many years of service Nell retired from the LTCF in 1992.
She then spent her retirement years visiting her family and friends and enjoyed returning to her homeland. She took great pleasure spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Nell was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Arthur, her sisters Dulcie and Jean, nephew John, and her beloved daughter Denise (Hein) Scott.
